The 8th annual Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival saw a stellar literary line-up, with the famously funny and feisty Catherine Deveny, writer and all round funny-man Danny Katz, as well as author talks with Alice Pung, Graeme Simsion, Jo Case and Shen Zhimin. Other events included the inaugural Literary Trivia and Morning Tea as well as Coffee with the Writers attended by Rosalie Ham, Kate Larsen and Hugh Jones.
Workshops for young writers were held with writer and illustrator Gabrielle Wang, writer Demet Divaroren and comic book artist Bernard Caleo. Littlies were treated to Storytime in the Park and Indigenous Storytelling as part of Random Acts of Reading. Sunshine Art Spaces also hosted Mosaic Musings and Stencil the Streets workshops as well as the quirky Pop-Up Library, complete with indoor garden.
The festival wrapped up on September 16 with the presentation of the 2013 Brimbank Writers Awards. The Awards recognise exceptional writing talent in those who live, work or study in Brimbank. Over $3,500 in prizes were presented to entrants of ages for short story, poetry, and for the very first time, songwriting. The ceremony was hosted by writer and comedian Tony Wilson alongside judges Bec Kavanagh, Emilie Zoey-Baker, Charles Jenkins and John Weldon. All of the award winning stories, poems and songs are available to read
