What is Regional Rail Link?

Regional Rail Link is a major new rail line running from West Werribee to Deer Park and along the existing rail corridor through suburbs including Sunshine and Footscray to Southern Cross Station.

Regional Rail Link separates regional trains from metropolitan trains – for the first time giving Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat trains their own dedicated tracks through the metropolitan system from Sunshine to Southern Cross Station.

Regional Rail Link will increase capacity and reliability for Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat services.

It will free up critically needed space for additional suburban services on the Werribee, Sunbury and Craigieburn lines.

The project will include:

  • a new set of dedicated regional tracks - allowing regional services to run directly into Melbourne and not be caught up with the growing number of suburban services
  • two new stations at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit
  • two new platforms at Southern Cross Station and
  • construction of a new rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River.

What does the Regional Rail Link mean for Brimbank?

"The Regional Rail Link project is great for Brimbank and certainly great for Sunshine and will add value to Council's commitment to revitalising the Sunshine Town Centre.

Having the infrastructure, amenity and safety of the Sunshine Railway Station substantially improved will provide Sunshine with a major asset to attract and welcome people to the area. It will create major opportunities for urban renewal and a brighter future for Sunshine"

- Chair of Brimbank City Council Administrators, Mr Peter Lewinsky.

The Regional Rail Link project will provide much improved rail infrastructure within the Brimbank municipality, with the most signification improvement happening with in Sunshine.

A redevelopment of th Sunshine Railway Station will see better linkages, safer access, and a more integrated transport precinct not to mention a much safer environment for commuter, pedestrians, cyclists and the community.

Two road/rail separation's at level crossings on Anderson Road in Sunshine will improve traffic flow and community safety.

Regional Rail Link is also crucial to managing growth in Brimbank and Wyndham, as well as in Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat and is the key to the revitalisation of communities along the 47 kilometre route from Central Melbourne to Werribee. The West, Australia's fastest growing region, and regional Victoria need extra train services for up to 9000 passengers across the network in peak hour.
