The 9th annual Brimbank Writers & Readers Festival saw a stellar literary line-up, with the hilarious and engaging John Safran, cartoonist and illustrator Oslo Davis, as well as author talks with Spiri Tsintziras, Luke Ryan and Thuy Dang. Other events included panel discussion ‘The Business of Writing’, with Justin Heazlewood, Torre DeRoche and Eugenia Flynn, as well as Literary Trivia and Morning Tea.
Workshops for young writers were held with authors Chrissie Perry and Melissa Keil, and littlies were treated to Storytime in the Park with Mary-Lou Keaney. Sydenham Community Hub hosted a Comic Club Exhibition, celebrating the Sydenham Library Comic Club’s first comic, Sunshine Arts Spaces hosted a writing and screen printing workshop, and West Sunshine served as a quirky Pop-Up Library.
The festival wrapped up on September 15 with the presentation of the 2014 Brimbank Writers Awards. The Awards recognise exceptional writing talent in those who live, work or study in Brimbank. Over $3,500 in prizes were presented to entrants of ages for short story, poetry, and songwriting. The ceremony was hosted by comic artist and performer Bernard Caleo alongside judges Bec Kavanagh, Emilie Zoey-Baker, Charles Jenkins and John Weldon.
