Our Community Safety

What is Community Safety?

Community Safety is a state of being as well as a state of mind…a component of a person’s health and wellbeing.

Community safety in Brimbank is where:

A person’s experiences and perceptions combine to influence their sense of safety.  These experiences and perceptions are informed by societal attitudes, practices and people’s behaviour, as well as the appearance and design of places.

A person’s sense of safety is felt when they can live without fear of intentional or unintentional injury.

Our role in enhancing Community Safety

We have an important role to play in influencing perceptions of safety through the delivery of its many services.  Some areas of influence for Council include:

  • Promoting health and wellbeing
  • Enhancing the appearance of public spaces
  • The provision of infrastructure that connects community members and provides opportunities for positive recreational and social pursuits
  • Planning and designing communities that are safe, attractive and sustainable
  • Promoting strong and healthy social development
  • Conducting arts and cultural events and educational classes as forums for people to gather and strengthen community relationships
  • Working with and informing safety partners, such as the Police, of the concerns and issues faced by residents in relation to safety and
  • Advocating for improved safety measures from other levels of government and their agencies.
