Organic Green Waste
We provide an optional green waste service once per fortnight. It is collected on the same day as your garbage.
Green waste bins are 140 or 240 litres and have a bright green lid.
How do I get a green waste bin?
A green waste bin for your property can be organised through customer service on 9249 4000.
Please note: The optional green waste service incurs an annual fee.
What happens to the green waste?
When you separate your green waste for collection by Council, it is composted and turned into garden products including potting mix, mulch and compost.
Environmental Benefits of separating your green waste
By separating your green waste from your landfill waste you are helping reduce our waste to landfill and the associated environmental effects.
If green waste is added to the normal waste stream, it will be dumped and capped in a landfill. Here, it will decompose without oxygen (anaerobically). The process of anaerobic decomposition produces methane, a gas with a global warming potential 21 times more than carbon dioxide.
Turning your green waste into compost is important because these products help return important nutrients to soil, without the need for artificial fertilisers. By mulching your garden beds you are also reducing the need to irrigate due to lower evaporation rates.
You are encouraged to purchase mulch from our Green Centre when it is available as this closes the loop in terms of recycling!
Annual Green Waste Collection Service
Items which can be collected as part of this service include:
• tree branches less than 1.5m in length tied together with string (Note: bundles to be no more than 300 mm in diameter),
• grass clippings in an open container,
• tree limbs free of branches less than 1.5 m in length neatly stacked,
• small tree roots that can be lifted by one person.
Please Note: Soil, plastic bags, wire or rope, bricks, building material or other hard waste items are not able to be collected as part of the Annual Green Waste Service.
A total volume of no more than 5 cubic metres (about 3 small trailer loads) of green waste will be collected from each residential property.
