Supporting migrants who make Brimbank home – have your say

Brimbank Council will continue its commitment to successfully settling migrants and new arrivals in our community under the draft Brimbank Settlement Action Plan (BSAP) 2019-2023.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve invited community feedback on the draft plan, which provides long term strategies that respond to the challenges facing new and emerging communities.

“We are proud to be one of the most multicultural communities in Victoria and see diversity as one of our key strengths.

“Brimbank is continuing to grow and change – with refugees, humanitarian entrants, asylum seekers, migrants and skilled migrants, making up a significant portion of our new and emerging communities.

“This diversity brings remarkable opportunities and benefits for our future economic development, cultural richness, as well as diversity in ideas, approaches, and opportunities.

“But migrants and refugees also face unique challenges – and successful settlement depends on receiving high quality support as they embark on their new lives in Australia.

“Under the Brimbank Settlement Action Plan, Council will work in partnership with community groups, service providers, business and government agencies to deliver a range of strategies and initiatives to support people who are migrating to Brimbank,” Cr Congreve said.

The draft plan focuses on eight themes for support: Education and Training, Employment, Family and Social Connections, Civic Participation, Language Services, Housing, Transport, and Services Provision.

The draft plan aligns with Australia’s Multicultural Statement: Multicultural Australia – United, Strong, Successful as well as the National Settlement Framework.

Cr Congreve urged community members who had recently settled in Australia to review the draft plan and share their thoughts and ideas.

“We need to hear from people who have recently made Australia their home. Have we got this right? Are there things we should do differently? Should we do more?”

Community members have two months to view the draft Brimbank Settlement Action Plan (BSAP) 2019-2023 and provide feedback.
