Students from two Brimbank primary schools will unveil projects showcasing their civic pride and community spirit – with two Family Fun Days in Albanvale and Sunshine later this month.
Brimbank Mayor Cr Margaret Giudice said the projects were part of Council’s Dynamic Young Citizens of Brimbank program – which supports students to identify local issues and work with Council to complete local projects that add value to their neighbourhoods.
“I am delighted to see so many young people connecting with their local environment, identifying projects where they can make a real difference and engaging with Council to bring these projects to fruition,” Cr Giudice said.
Students from Sunshine Harvester Primary School painted a welcome mat celebrating diverse cultures in the school neighbourhood and planted a community herb garden on a plot of land on the corner of Duke Street and Hertford Road.
Students from Albanvale Primary School created a park bench mosaic celebrating cultural diversity – which was incorporated as part of Council’s upgrade to Dover Avenue Community Park.
“Through the Dynamic Young Citizens Program – these students have made a real contribution to their local communities, while learning about Council and civic responsibility,” Cr Giudice said.
“It is people who are the heart of this wonderful community of ours and there is a lot to learn from the enthusiasm of our young citizens, the schools that support and encourage them and the parents who have helped instil community pride in these young people.”
In previous years the Dynamic Young Citizens program has been successfully delivered in five other primary schools, including Deer Park North, St Albans Heights, St Albans North and Ardeer Primary resulting in capital works improvements and art-based installations at Stradbroke Reserve, Sassella Park and Isabella Williams Memorial Reserve.
The projects have been partly funded through grant money from the Department of Social Services’ Communities for Children facilitated by The Smith Family.
Family Fun Day events will be held to celebrate both projects.
