Media Release - 29 November 2007

$170,000 will be spent on a project that will restore the area of the HV McKay Memorial Gardens that will be left vacant after the demolition of the Sunshine Bowling Club facilities.

The project will be part of Brimbank Council’s drive to restore the HV McKay Memorial Gardens in Sunshine as a cherished community asset and heritage landmark.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 27 November 2007, the Council adopted several recommendations aimed at restoring the Gardens to their original glory. The cost of restoring
the entire gardens is estimated at approximately $700,000.

As a start, the Council will focus on developing the open space within the HV McKay Memorial Gardens that will become available after the removal of the Sunshine Bowls Club. The Council will prepare a concept plan that aims at restoring this significant section of the gardens back to their original state.

The Council will also develop a detailed Action Plan for the restoration of the entire gardens.

This will be in accordance with the 1994 Conservation Analysis and Management Guidelines prepared for the former City of Sunshine and the Sunshine and District Historical Society in 1994, but will be modified in order to suit current and future conditions. The plan will be presented back to the Council in time for consideration under the 2008/2009 budget.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Margaret Giudice said the Council was committed to restoring the heritage landmark.

“The HV McKay Memorial Gardens is an important local asset and has a significant connection to our City’s history,” said the Mayor.

Harvester Ward Councillor, Miles Dymott who asked for the investigation said: “The Council would like to improve this fantastic open space so that more residents come along to enjoy the gardens.

“The removal of the bowling club facilities is a good opportunity for the Council to restore a significant section of the gardens, and these improvements will set the tone for the future restoration works,” Cr Dymott said.

The proposal to support restoration of the gardens was adopted at an earlier Council Meeting on 28 August 2007.
