Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Systems in Public Places Policy

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance cameras operate throughout parts of Sunshine and St Albans activity centres, as part of our Public Safety CCTV program.

The cameras were delivered through the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund 2016-17 and the Community Safety Infrastructure Grant 2020/2021, funded by State Government.

The cameras are intended to work alongside other safer design and place-based initiatives to help:

  • Reduce and deter crime and anti-social behaviour
  • Improve perceptions of safety
  • Improve the operational and investigative capacity of Victoria Police

Our Code of Practice for CCTV in Sunshine Town Centre (PDF 6.6MB) and Code of Practice for St Albans Town Centre sets the standards for how the Brimbank CCTV system operates to ensure it balances public safety with privacy.

The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Systems in Public Places Policy (PDF 42KB) provides direction and guidance to Council when considering the introduction of a CCTV System in public places.

The objectives of this policy are:

To outline the specific requirements in which the implementation of CCTV Systems in public places may be considered;

To ensure any CCTV Systems in public places implemented are compliant with relevant legislation and other statutory requirements.
