What is your connection to Brimbank?
I have been an active citizen of Brimbank for over 15 years. Over that time, I have had the joy of participating in numerous projects to improve our community’s wellbeing, ranging from White Ribbon Day and Clean Up Day Australia for Brimbank, through to the St Albans Lunar New Year Festival and Children Moon Lantern Festival. I teach Computer and English classes for seniors and Vietnamese traditional music and dance. I hold several executive leadership roles within Brimbank community organisations, including President of the Lions Club of Melbourne Vietnamese, Founding Vice President of the Women’s Support Network, and Founder of Australian Vietnamese Arts and Culture. As a result, I have a strong connection to Brimbank.
What do you think is the greatest strength of the Brimbank Community?
Our community is rich in its diversity, so we benefit from being exposed to diverse cultures, perspectives, and lifestyles. This fosters a strong sense of community, connection and vibrancy, making Brimbank a unique place to live, work and play. Our multiculturalism is our greatest strength.
What are your greatest concerns for Brimbank?
My main concerns are language barriers, mental health, unemployment, and social isolation. People who do not speak English well or at all, may feel isolated and unable to express themselves or connect with others. These language barriers also make it harder to learn new technology, especially for older adults.
What made you decide to run for Council?
As encouraged by my parents, I always try and “give back” to this country – the land that welcomed my family as refugees, and allowed us the freedom to build a safe, successful, and happy life.
What do you hope to achieve in your term as a Brimbank City Councillor?
I am committed to ensuring that our community’s voice is heard and addressed. I aim to promote local economic growth by building connections and harnessing the diverse strengths of our community.
What is your favourite thing to do in Brimbank?
I love going to cultural events to explore different traditions and try new foods. Attending multicultural events also helps me to meet new people and build connections.
