If you live near one of Brimbank’s native grasslands, there are a few things you can do to be a good grassland neighbour.
Learn some simple tips on how to be a good grassland neighbour and share this with your friends and family:
1. Build a cat enclosure to keep your cat and wildlife safe at all times. One roaming cat, on average, kills 186 wild animals each year.
2. Order a green waste bin for disposal of garden waste
3. Include some native grassland plants in your home garden
4. Walk your dog on a lead

Environmental “Friends of” Brimbank groups are important partners in helping us to look after our natural environment. Community work together to help plant gardens, share knowledge, look after our creeks and grasslands and help celebrate our natural spaces.

Create a wildlife-friendly garden
Brimbank is lucky to have lots of open spaces to support local wildlife, but houses separate these open spaces, meaning our birds, lizards and insects have to travel distances to move around. Native gardens help to close these gaps to create safe wildlife corridors.
For example, your backyard or nature strip could be an important stopover for small lizards to shelter in while they travel between a creek and grassland reserve. Native wildflowers in pots can boost beneficial insects, including pollinators for our vegetable gardens and natural pest control for our street trees.
Brimbank Gardens for Wildlife Program encourages people to grow plants that attract native wildlife such as birds, butterflies and frogs. Renters and property owners within Brimbank can apply for a free visit from trained volunteers who will give tips to improve your garden for wildlife.
