Nature strips are an important part of Brimbank’s urban environment. They contribute significantly to neighbourhood character, enhance local streetscapes and environmental values. A nature strip is the public space between the property boundary, footpath and the roadside kerb and driveway.

A nature strip in Brimbank is general mown grass with planted street trees in the centre. It can also be modified to include more landscaped treatments, other than mown grass. Nature strips commonly house important underground services such as gas, water, electricity and communications. Nature strips are important for traffic and pedestrian safety as they provide greater visibility, especially at intersections and corners.

Whose responsibility is it to maintain the naturestrip?

Residents and property owners are encouraged to care for their naturestrip area, the accepted custom is for residents to maintain the nature strip abutting their property in conjunction with their other lawn areas.

It is a Council’s responsibility to maintain the ‘local road reserve’ (building line to building line including nature strip).
