Melbourne Airport Rail, Sunshine Station Superhub and Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan

Attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang

“While the Leader of the Opposition, Peter Dutton’s announcement of support for the Melbourne Airport Rail reflects the importance of this project for the nation, Brimbank City Council strongly opposes any cuts to the scope of the Sunshine Station Superhub and the Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan.

"These are not "gold-plate projects" but critical infrastructure urgently needed to connect the west and the regions to the airport and the CBD.

"The Melbourne Airport Rail, the transformation of Sunshine Station into a superhub and the implementation of the Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan, are interdependent projects that must be delivered in entirety to adequately service the 18 million people - both locals and visitors – who will be travelling on the Melbourne Airport Rail each year.

"These intertwined projects are urgently needed to support the economic growth, housing needs and development of Melbourne’s western region. Sunshine is already one of Melbourne's most complex and critical rail junctions. Its reconfiguration will benefit all Victorians and visitors, especially those travelling from the airport, throughout the west and into the regions of Sunshine, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Any cuts to the proposed Sunshine Station works will also compromise the future electrification of both the Melton and Wyndham train lines.

"The redevelopment of Sunshine Station, into an equivalent of the Southern Cross in the west, along with the complete delivery of the Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan is critical to the success of Melbourne Airport Rail. We simply cannot have one without the other.

“Our priority is to continue to advocate for the full funding required for complete delivery of the Melbourne Airport Rail, Sunshine Station development and the Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan including Albion Station, and to secure this commitment from both major parties - both Federal and State.”
