More indoor water space, a major expansion of the gym, and indoor water play area are amongst the improvements flagged in the new master plan for Sunshine Leisure Centre.
The adoption of the Sunshine Leisure Centre Master Plan 2019 follows a month-long community consultation process from May to June 2019 after the release of the draft master plan, which attracted 15 community submissions.
Brimbank Mayor, Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council worked closely with the community and industry experts to develop a master plan that reflects community wants and future population needs.
“We know our community love their local leisure centres – we do too.
“Sunshine Leisure Centre attracts more than 330,000 people through its doors each year.
“It was last redeveloped in 2007, but it’s small and it’s important we have a plan in place for how it can be improved and expanded in the future.
“We now have a master plan we are confident reflects what the community want, and what the community will need as it continues to grow.
“The master plan recommends more indoor water space via a warm water exercise pool, and indoor water play equipment.
“A bigger gym, new group fitness rooms, new front of house facilities, and scope to extend the outdoor pool have also been flagged,” Cr Congreve said.
The indicative cost for implementing the master plan is about $35 million.
The Sunshine Leisure Centre Master Plan includes a staged implementation plan, subject to future budget allocations and the completion of a further strategic assessment of the site to look at broader development opportunities.
In addition to the improvements outlined in the master plan, a number of immediate upgrades are already underway at Sunshine Leisure Centre.
“If you’ve visited the centre in recent months, you’ll be aware of the many improvements that have recently been made – and there’s more to come.
“We’ve introduced year-round swimming in the outdoor pool, cycle (RPM) classes started earlier this month, and very soon we’ll be opening the gym 24-hours a day.
“We’ve made improvements to the foyer, introduced a new café and a dedicated merchandise area, and upgrades to the change rooms and indoor leisure pool are just about complete,” Cr Congreve said.
Sunshine Leisure Centre is located at 5 Kennedy Street, Sunshine.
