Brimbank City Council has been shortlisted in the 2019 Australian Urban Design Awards for the recently completed Princess Street Upgrade in St Albans.
Princess Street Upgrade is the first shared user zone in Brimbank creating a pedestrian focused link between the St Albans train station, the nearby Errington Precinct, and of course, the Bowery Theatre at St Albans Community Centre.
The upgrade features bold colours, improved safety, more trees, feature lighting, garden beds and seating, all in a vibrant, theatrical design, inspired by the work of the late artist Leigh Bowery. The project is shortlisted for the ‘Built projects – local and neighbourhood scale’ award category.
Brimbank Mayor, Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council is thrilled the impressive Princess Street Upgrade has been shortlisted for an urban design award.
“Being recognised as a finalist at a national level is a wonderful achievement for Council.
“The transformation of Princess Street into a bold new public space has created a fun, lively atmosphere where people feel safe and comfortable getting around or meeting up with friends.
“Council’s vision is for Brimbank to be vibrant, harmonious and welcoming – and a great place to live, work and grow.
“Creating high quality, attractive public spaces is one of the key ways we’re working to achieve this vision.
“We’re very excited to deliver this fantastic new precinct for our community.
“Next time you’re in the area, be sure to take a look around Princess Street, St Albans,” Cr Congreve said.
The $1.175 million Princess Street Upgrade was funded by Brimbank City Council ($925,000) in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program ($250,000).
