Final plans revealed for Australian-first hub as construction nears

St Albans Leisure Centre will close its doors for the last time in April after about 60 years serving the community, to make way for a world-class health and wellbeing hub.

The centre will be permanently closed to the public from 14 April 2020.

A pop-up gym and relocated group fitness classes will be available at the nearby Keilor Downs Community Centre from 14 April 2020 to support the community to stay active throughout the construction phase.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the final designs of the hub have now been finalised.

‘We’re so excited to be able to reveal to the community the final designs for the health and wellbeing hub – including the new aquatic and leisure facility.

‘The hub is going to be an amazing regional destination with something for everyone and we can’t wait to deliver it to the community.

‘In September 2019, Council announced that the current St Albans Leisure Centre would need to close to allow for construction of the health and wellbeing hub.

‘We’ve now confirmed that the centre will be permanently closed to the public from 14 April 2020.

‘We have made arrangements for a fancy new pop-up gym to be constructed next door to the Keilor Downs Community Centre, and we’ll be relocating group fitness classes within the community centre.

‘These will be available once the centre closes and we’re confident community members will be very comfortable in these accommodations while we build the hub,’ Cr Papafotiou said.

To make sure the community has an opportunity to say a proper goodbye to a facility that has played a part in the lives of many locals, Council will host a special farewell event on Thursday 9 April 2020. More details will be available soon.

The next step in the project will be for Council to finalise the current tender process and appoint a contractor to demolish the current facility and construct the hub.

Construction is expected to start in mid-2020. The health and wellbeing hub is expected to be completed in 2022.
