Western Rainbow Awards celebrating LGBTQIA+ community

Brimbank City Council staff, programs and partnerships were celebrated with five awards at the first ever Western Rainbow Awards, hosted by Hobson Bay Council on Friday, 6 October.

“Brimbank City Council is extremely honoured to receive five awards highlighting the amazing work and dedication staff and members of the community have put towards ensuring Brimbank is an inclusive, safe and empowering space for LGBTQIA+ community,” said Brimbank Mayor Cr Bruce Lancashire.

“Thanks to Hobsons Bay City Council and Mayor Cr Tony Briffa for establishing these awards for the benefit of all of us in the west.”

Hosted by Hobsons Bay City Council, the Western Rainbow Awards recognise LGBTQIA+ community related achievements across a variety of categories, with awardees including businesses, individuals, partnerships, programs and services, located anywhere in the western metropolitan region.

The Western Rainbow Awards recognise work specifically in relation to inclusion and empowerment of the LGBTQIA+ community. The awards presented to Brimbank are:

  1. Youth Focused Award – Crystal Queer Program – Brimbank Youth Services –
    This awards recognises outstanding projects and/or programs in the youth sector that demonstrate meaningful outcomes for, with or by LGBTQIA+ people aged 12-25 in the Western Metropolitan Region.
  2. Leading Change Award – Jacob Tiauli – Youth Support and Inclusion Officer and LGBTQIA+ Project Officer
    This award recognises a person who had shown dedication toward transforming attitudes, addressing barriers, improving accessibility and inclusiveness for LGBTQIA+ people in the Western Metropolitan Region.
  3. Young Person Award – Spencer Morgan – Member of the Crystal Queer program and the Disability Advisory Committee –
    This award recognises outstanding efforts by a young person demonstrating meaningful outcomes for, with or by LGBTQIA+ people aged 12-25 in the Western Metropolitan Region.
  4. Project or Program – Supporting LGBTQIA+ Students: Teachers Breakfast – partnership between Brimbank and Maribyrnong Youth Services –
    This award recognises innovation by an organisation, service, provider or business in delivering an LGBTQIA+ inclusive project or program in the Western Metropolitan Region.
  5. Life Time Achievement – Anastasia Le – MatchWorks Sunshine and their work with Brimbank City Council –
    This award recognises exceptional lifetime achievement by a person who has made contributions with lasting positive impacts for LGBTQIA+ communities in the Western Metropolitan Region.
