Media release - Sunshine poised to become powerhouse of Melbourne’s west

Brimbank Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s release of the Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan and announcement that it will invest $143 million to deliver the first stage of the Masterplan, as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project.

The development of the Sunshine Precinct is a landmark project that has the capacity to reinvent Brimbank as a thriving economic centre — unlocking jobs now and for future generations for people across western Melbourne.

In March 2022 the State Government released a draft Sunshine Station Super Hub Masterplan which draws on the vision Brimbank Council established for the CBD based on extensive community and stakeholder feedback.

The first stage of works will include:

  • A new bus interchange

  • A new station plaza and entrance

  • New shared user paths and open space

  • New pick up / drop off areas

  • Creation of a development site; and

  • Intersection upgrades around the bus interchange.

Council estimates about $500 million will be needed to fund the State Government’s Sunshine Station Masterplan in full.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Jasmine Nguyen said:

“We’re thrilled with today’s announcement. This is the result of significant advocacy by Council and the community, and months of collaboration with the Victorian Government to get the best outcome for Sunshine and the west.

“This is a significant step towards the transformation of the working class area of Sunshine into the powerhouse of Melbourne’s west through leveraging the Melbourne Airport Rail and other mega infrastructure investment.

“The transformation of the Sunshine Precinct has the potential to break the cycle of inter-generational unemployment and disadvantage by maximising the benefits the airport rail can provide for the local community.

“We look forward to seeing works begin and to the delivery of further stages of the masterplan in the years to come.”
