Media release - Barro Group contend landfill licence cancellation as fires continue to burn

A statement from Brimbank Mayor, Cr Bruce Lancashire:

“Brimbank Council is disappointed to learn that the Barro Group is contesting its licence cancellation to operate the Sunshine Landfill in Kealba at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“In January, Council welcomed the EPA Victoria announcement that the Barro Group licence to operate the landfill - also known as the Kealba Landfill - had been cancelled. The cancellation means they cannot accept any more waste at the landfill.

“We cannot fathom the idea that Barro Group’s licence to continue to accept landfill at the site could be reinstated.

“Our community has been suffering for years from the impacts of the noxious odours coming from hotspot fires at the Barro Group’s Kealba Landfill, and these hotspot fires continue to burn.

“The focus should be on extinguishing these fires – not accepting more landfill.

“Brimbank Council has been advocating on behalf of residents for better waste management at the Sunshine Landfill for some time now.

“A lot of work has gone into advocating for this change by Brimbank Council and concerned citizens, including those most impacted who live near the site.”
