Media release - Brimbank welcomes funding for safer local roads

Brimbank Council has welcomed a recent Victorian Government announcement of funding that will enable Brimbank to develop, design and plan road safety improvements along council-managed roads, intersections and precincts.

Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Melissa Horne announced the funding as the first stage of the Labor Government’s $210 million Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, for Brimbank, along with 10 other municipalities.

Council looks forward to partnering with the Victorian Government on delivering the associated works.

Road safety and better transport infrastructure is a key priority for Council. Council’s Transport Priorities Paper 2022 identifies issues with the current transport network, and proposes service solutions and infrastructure projects that will improve connectivity and safety in and around Melbourne’s western suburbs.

A key Council priority is to enhance safety, health and wellbeing across the transport network. This needs investment to prioritise improvement at high-risk locations, and Council has been advocating strongly for support for this for a long time.

Council embraces the Safe System approach to road safety and supports the State Government’s Towards Zero campaign which aims to prevent anyone being killed or seriously injured on the Victorian road network.

Quotes to be attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Bruce Lancashire:

“Council thanks the Victorian Government for supporting our aim of creating safer roads in Brimbank.

“We look forward to working closely with the Department of Transport and Planning and Transport Accident Commission to identify, plan, develop and deliver more road safety upgrades on local roads across the municipality.

“Our aim is to ensure there are safer vehicles on our road network, safer road designs, safer vehicle speeds and safer behaviour by those who use our road networks.”

“We’d like to thank our local MPs for their efforts in advocating for road safety funding for Brimbank.”
