Media release - Have your say on the future vision and plans for Sunshine Energy Park

Brimbank Council is seeking feedback on the draft Sunshine Energy Park Vision Plan, which aims to create a vision for a new major parkland destination next to the Sunshine CBD.

Sunshine Energy Park is located on Wurundjeri Land, within the Sunshine Priority Precinct, and has the potential to be transformed into a destination of local, regional and state significance.

This is an opportunity to create a shared vision for the site to be restored and reimagined as a prominent open space, and an environmental and cultural asset for the community.

The draft Vision Plan provides opportunities for connection to country, sport, leisure and recreation, education, events, recycling and repurposing, energy production, food growing, habitat creation, social interaction, and play.

It sets an exciting long-term vision to help Council seek funding and plan for development of the site in stages. The proposed works include large-scale tree planting, a possible solar farm location, cycling and walking tracks, sports fields and stadium, play spaces, a large urban forest and wetland system, and much more.

The draft Vision Plan is an action from Council’s Transforming Brimbank agenda. It has been informed by many Council plans, including Together We are Brimbank 2021, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Strategy 2018-2023, Climate Emergency Plan, and the Sunshine Priority Precinct Vision 2050.

Sunshine Energy Park is 54 hectares of closed landfill located in Albion (which is part of the closed Sunshine landfills), and was a former basalt quarry. The closed Sunshine landfills are now suitable to consider opportunities for recreation and community use after extensive rehabilitation works and aftercare management, which will continue into the future.

Quotes to be attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Bruce Lancashire:

“This is an exciting opportunity to transform Sunshine Energy Park into a future landmark of the west, and a major recreational and community hub. There’s potential to create a solar farm, an urban forest, and re-establishment of native trees, grasses and fauna.

“I’d encourage people to share their feedback on the draft Vision Plan, and help create a destination of cultural and ecological significance for the Brimbank community, long into the future.”
