Our social media pages are friendly and safe places for Council to share information, and for the community to talk to Council. 

Please be considerate when posting on our social media channels and others associated with Council.

Guidelines for engaging on our social media channels

Be respectful

Don’t harass, insult or be abusive toward others.  

We don’t tolerate comments that are: 

  • defamatory 

  • obscene 

  • offensive 

  • threatening 

  • abusive 

  • pornographic 

  • vulgar 

  • profane 

  • indecent  

  • otherwise unlawful commentary.  

This includes material that racially or religiously vilifies a person or community, incites violence or hatred, or is likely to offend, insult or humiliate others based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation or any physical or mental disability.

Keep it relevant

Don’t post off-topic or promote personal, commercial interests or party political statements. 

This includes:  

  • consistently posting multiple unrelated comments across our posts with little relevance to the original topics 

  • repeatedly raising issues that have already been thoroughly addressed/resolved, to a degree that disrupts conversation

Stay legal and authentic

Avoid making defamatory, libellous, false or misleading comments and respect others’ intellectual property rights.  

Don't misrepresent yourself or others, or spread misinformation. This includes information contradictory to state and federal government advice.

Think about privacy

For your own safety, and the safety of others, don’t include personal information such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses.

Comments on our content by others are their views only. Council does not necessarily endorse or agree with those views or third-party content which we may share. We cannot vouch for the accuracy, validity and /or completeness of third-party information.

Breaches of these rules

We reserve the remove any post/comments to our social media channels that do not follow the guidelines outlined above. 

We will give up to 2 warnings for repeated breaches of our social media guidelines. In these instances, we will inform you via comment or private message to let you know: 

  • your post has been deleted

  • which part of our rules has been breached 

  • and provide you a link to this page

If you breach our guidelines a third time, we may block you from our social media pages. 
 
We are not obliged to reinstate anyone who has been blocked or banned.

Privacy Collection Notice

Brimbank City Council uses third-party software Brolly to capture a record of all activity on our social media accounts, which includes posts, comments and private messages.

We do this to meet our legal obligations under the Public Records Act 1973. While all data is stored securely and kept in Australia, we recommend that you do not include personal information such as full names, addresses, phone numbers or email addresses.
