When you register your pet for the first time, you’ll need to provide copies of the desexing certificate, microchip number and any other relevant documents.

Pet registrations and permits run on a fixed yearly period from 10 April to 9 April. All registrations and permits must be renewed by 10 April each year.
Registrations and permits completed part way through the yearly period are valid only until 9 April and must be renewed by 10 April.

When you register your pet for the first time, you’ll need to provide:
Microchip number
Pension Card (if applicable)
Desexing Certificate or letter from your veterinarian confirming the animal has been desexed
OR
Veterinary Exemption from desexing. A letter from your veterinarian outlining the health reasons for delayed or exempt desexing. This cannot just state "due to age". Delayed desexing letters MUST state at what age desexing is recommended
Proof of ownership. You must provide documents that show both your own name and the name of your pet. If the desexing certificate and microchip number do not show both pet and owners names then other documents must be supplied that indicate proof of ownership. A statutory declaration claiming ownership may be required.

Multiple Pet Permits
You need a multiple pet permit if you have:
- More than two cats (153.0 KB)
- More than two dogs (131.0 KB)
- More than six (6) different species of animal;
- Any agricultural animal unless the land is securely fenced and has a minimum size of 2 hectares for the first animal and a further 0.5 hectares for each additional animal.
- More than the maximum number of animals (see table below);

You need a permit to keep a cockatoo or galah in Brimbank. Only the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and Galah can be held without an Advanced Wildlife Licence.

Your dog or cat may be exempt from desexing if:
- You have written advice from your vet that your animal’s health will be negatively impacted if desexed
- You're a current member of an applicable organisation
- You conduct a registered domestic animal business under which dogs or cats are used for breeding purposes
- It is a working or farm dog
- It is a dangerous dog, kept as a guard dog for non-residential premises
- It is a dangerous dog that has undergone protection training in accordance with any relevant Code of Practice made under section 59 of the Domestic Animals Act

If you keep more than two dogs, cats pigeons, poultry, cockatoos or galahs you will need a permit.
The animals must be registered before applying for the Excess Pet Permit.

Excess pet permits for cats and dogs are only applicable for non-breeding pets. If you have more than two cats or dogs and are using one or more for breeding, please contact Animal Management at info@brimbank.vic.gov.au to discuss permit options for your animals.

There is no registration fee if the applicant has a disability that necessitates an assistance dog.
The assistance dog must
- have been trained to alleviate the effect(s) of the disability
- have completed obedience training, as defined in the GiC Order
- be at least 12-months old
- be microchipped
- be desexed.

What if my pet has passed away or moved?
If you’ve paid your registration fee and your pet passes away, or moves to another municipality, there are two options:
If you're going to adopt another pet, we can transfer paid fees to the new animal. You may wish to order a new Pet tag replacement.
OR
You can apply in writing for paid registration fees to be refunded before 30 June of current registration year only.
