Media Release - Council submission supports mental health and wellbeing

Brimbank Council has welcomed the opportunity to make a submission to the Victorian Government’s review on the new Mental Health and Wellbeing Act.

This follows recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System to replace the current Mental Health Act 2014 with a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Act, which is expected to be in place by mid-2022.

This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of the new Act in an effort to strengthen and improve support for people experiencing mental ill-health, as well as their families, carers and supporters.

This landmark event will establish the foundations for a more effective and responsive mental health and wellbeing system for years to come.

Mental wellbeing is a significant issue in Brimbank with residents reporting lower levels of wellbeing than Victoria, and women in particular, experiencing more psychological distress, anxiety and depression than men.

Supporting improved mental wellbeing is a health and wellbeing priority for Council. It’s important we address the significant impacts of COVID-19 on resident’s mental wellbeing, especially impacting young people, newly-arrived migrants, unemployed people and women.

Quotes to be attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic:

“Mental health is important to Brimbank and will continue to be a priority for our Council.

“Council has an important role to play in mental health prevention, early intervention and advocacy. We want to see more protection and support, particularly concerning young people and newly arrived communities.

“Council expressed in principle support in its submission to the Victorian Government. However, our feedback asks for more focus be given on primary prevention and health promotion to prevent mental health problems in the first place.

“Council’s submission also asks for adequate resourcing to help develop programs and interventions targeting social connection and improved wellbeing for people with mental illness.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant negative impact on resident’s mental wellbeing, with many people facing job losses, lack of social interaction and an uncertain future.

“We want to make sure Brimbank’s needs are recognised and supported through the new Act.

“We remain focused on protecting, improving and promoting community health and wellbeing in Brimbank.
