Media release - Brimbank welcomes progress on the Melbourne Airport Rail project

Brimbank City Council welcomes the announcement by Minister Catherine King that the Melbourne Airport Rail has renewed Commonwealth Government support, and urges all parties to work together to deliver the project on schedule for the benefit of community and stakeholders.

Minister King made a suite of announcements indicating which infrastructure projects continued to have federal government support and which projects did not, indicating that Melbourne Airport Rail was to progress with support to the next stage of planning.

While Council welcomes today’s announcement which provided much needed certainty for the Melbourne Airport Rail project, the delay as a result of the review continues to impact other infrastructure and development projects, such as the Sunshine Station Precinct and Albion Station Redevelopment.

The Melbourne Airport Rail project, is the first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop and is reliant on commitments of $5 billion each from both the state and federal governments.

The delivery of the Melbourne Airport Rail project will be a major catalyst for the transformation of the Sunshine CBD, where the State Government is targeting an additional 43,000 new residents and 29,000 new jobs by 2051.

Brimbank City Council calls on the Victorian Government to respond to the announcement and recommit to the original timeline, which sees the project completed by 2029.

Council will continue to work with governments and community to ensure the project delivers for Brimbank and the west.

Quotes to be attributable to Brimbank Mayor Cr Bruce Lancashire:

“Our community expects these projects to be delivered and continued delays cause frustration and uncertainly with community and stakeholders. The announcement by Minister King today is a welcome step towards further action and solid commitments to realising important infrastructure in Melbourne’s west.

“Done right, major transport infrastructure investment coming to Brimbank will transform Sunshine into the CBD of the Melbourne’s west. This is a once in a generation opportunity to deliver much needed local jobs and affordable housing, to improve lives and livelihoods and create positive lasting change.

“Council has been advocating for these important projects since 2010, and, as Mayor I have met personally with Minister King to impress upon her how important this infrastructure is for Brimbank and Melbourne’s west.”
