Media Release - Support is available to improve mental wellbeing

The ongoing pandemic is placing an increasing strain on everyone and for those who’re struggling to cope, or suffering from mental health related issues, there are people and services out there to help.

Lifeline can be contacted on Tel 131114 at any time of the day or night for counselling, information, referrals and immediate and confidential opportunities to discuss a problem or concern.

The Lifeline service responds to callers of all ages with a wide range of concerns and emergencies. This includes matters involving relationships, domestic violence, family issues, youth issues, child abuse, depression & anxiety, loneliness, unemployment, grief, problems at work or school, homelessness, money worries, drug & alcohol problems and suicide.

Beyond blue can be contacted either online or via the phone (1800512348) to discuss how the pandemic is affecting your mental wellbeing. Beyond blue will provide advice and support based on specific needs.

Emergency relief, including temporary food relief and more is also available for those who need it.

Anyone who needs to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 may request a relief package delivered by the Australian Red Cross. This service can be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398 and select Option four, with calls directed to the Red Cross, or email EmergencyManagement@Brimbank.vic.gov.au where emails are monitored daily.

A list of emergency relief resources available to Brimbank community members can be accessed on Council’s website - www.brimbank.vic.gov.au/community/covid-19-support-services

Earlier this year Council welcomed a State Government Announcement that Brimbank will become the home of a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, as part of the State’s response to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic said:

“Our community already experiences some of the highest psychological distress levels across Victoria and the current pandemic is placing more stress on us all.

“The good news is that there are people and services out there to help support better mental wellbeing, or to deliver other relief during the pandemic, so please reach out if you need support.

“A list of emergency relief resources is available on Council’s website. More information about COVID-19 related support offered by the State Government is available at www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au.”
