Media Statement - Barro Group licence cancelled

Statement from Brimbank Mayor, Cr Bruce Lancashire:

“Brimbank City Council welcomes the EPA Victoria announcement that the Barro Group licence to operate at Sunshine Landfill (also known as the Kealba Landfill) has been cancelled.

“The cancellation means they cannot accept any more waste at the landfill.

“The Brimbank community has been suffering for years from the impacts of the noxious odours coming from hotspot fires at the Barro Group’s Kealba Landfill.

“At last, there has been decisive action on this issue.

“This is a win for the environment, local residents and the broader Victorian community, although the cost to the environment and the health of local residents is profound.

“Recovery will take significant time and resources.

“Brimbank Council has been advocating on behalf of residents for better waste management at the Sunshine Landfill for some time now.

“A lot of work has gone into advocating for this change by Brimbank Council and concerned citizens, including those most impacted who live near the site.

“This result belongs to everyone and is a step toward an improved amenity for the surrounding residents.”
